Karen Silkwood and the Cimarron plutonium plant
Cimarron Fuel Fabrication Site, near Crescent, Oklahoma
Karen Silkwood made plutonium fuel pellets at Kerr-McGee's plant here on the Cimarron River and was the first woman elected to her union's bargaining team. In 1974 she took safety complaints to the Atomic Energy Commission, and that November plutonium was found in her body and her house. On November 13 she died when her car left State Highway 74 on her way to meet a New York Times reporter and a union official. How the crash happened has never been settled. Her family's case reached the Supreme Court in 1984, and the plant closed in 1975.
