Born Benjamin Kubelsky and raised here, given a half-size violin at six and made to practise it, which turned into a vaudeville act and then into the most durable comic character on American radio: a man permanently thirty-nine years old who would not part with a nickel. He named the town constantly on air, always as a punchline, and the town took it entirely as a compliment. There is a statue of him with the violin downtown and a school named after him.
