Hoffman Island, built to hold the sick
1873
Lower New York Bay, Staten Island
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Staten Islanders burned the shore quarantine hospital to the ground in 1858 rather than live beside it, so the state built its replacements offshore instead. Eleven acres of fill were piled on Orchard Shoal in 1873 to make Hoffman Island, with smaller Swinburne Island alongside. Immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island showing signs of contagious disease were taken out here, and the ruins are now a bird sanctuary closed to landing.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
