Hemingway on Whitehead Street

Hemingway lived here for most of the 1930s and wrote To Have and Have Not, Green Hills of Africa and much of For Whom the Bell Tolls in a studio over the carriage house. His wife had the first swimming pool in Key West dug while he was away in Spain, at a cost that appalled him. He pressed a penny into the wet cement and told her she might as well have his last cent. Descendants of his six-toed cats still run the place.
