Haystack Rock and the tidepools
1968
Cannon Beach, Oregon
John Manard · CC BY-SA 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A 235-foot basalt sea stack left from Columbia River lava flows that reached the ocean sixteen million years ago. Tufted puffins nest on it and the tidepools around its base are protected to the point that stepping on them is an offence. It has been filmed to death. It is the rock behind the final scene of The Goonies, when the pirate ship sails out past the beach, and Point Break and Twilight were both shot on the next beach north at Ecola. It is possibly the most photographed rock in America.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
