Guittard Chocolate, in one family since a failed prospector gave up on gold

Etienne Guittard sailed from Tournus to California in 1860 carrying French chocolate to trade for supplies, spent three years failing to find gold in the Sierra, and went home to raise money for a different idea. He came back in 1868 and began making chocolate on Sansome Street in San Francisco, selling to miners who had done better than he had. Construction of the Embarcadero Freeway pushed the company out of the city in 1955 and it built a new plant here in Burlingame. Four generations later the family still owns it, which makes it the oldest continuously family held chocolate maker in the country.
