Garrison Dam floods the Fort Berthold bottomlands

The dam put 152,000 acres of the Fort Berthold Reservation under water, the wooded bottomland where the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara had farmed and sheltered stock, and where most of the population lived. A photograph of the tribal chairman weeping as the sale was signed in Washington became the standard image of what the Missouri dams cost.
