Gardiners Island and Captain Kidd's gold
1639
Gardiners Island, New York

The oldest family-owned land in the country, granted by the English crown and still held by Gardiners four centuries on, an entire island in the bay, off-limits and almost unchanged. In 1699 the pirate Kidd stopped and buried a chest of gold and jewels here on his way to trial. The governor dug it up and shipped it to London as evidence, and it helped hang him.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
