Edison's company came out to the Palisades in 1907 to shoot Rescued from an Eagle's Nest, and within a decade Fort Lee held around eleven studios, among them Champion, Universal, Fox and Alice Guy Blache's Solax, the first studio in the country run by a woman. Serials were staged on the cliffs with the heroine left hanging off the edge at the end of the reel, which is where cliffhanger comes from. Coal shortages, the 1918 flu and year round California sunshine emptied the town of film work by the 1920s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
