Fort Caspar and the misspelled city

Lieutenant Caspar Collins died here in 1865 covering a wagon train against Lakota and Cheyenne forces at the Platte Bridge, and the Army renamed the post for him. The town that grew up beside it meant to take the name too, but a clerk transposed the vowels and Casper it has been ever since. The reconstructed fort sits by the river crossing that made the spot matter: every major trail west funneled through here.
