Florida writes its constitution at St. Joseph

St. Joseph was the largest town in the territory, rich on cotton it had diverted from Apalachicola, and it hosted the convention that wrote Florida's first constitution. Then yellow fever came through in 1841 and a hurricane finished the job in 1844. Within a decade the town was gone completely, the survivors left, the buildings were carried away, and the site went back to scrub.
