Evergreen Cemetery was laid out for Black Miamians in 1913
1913
Allapattah, Miami, Florida
Three men filed for a charter in July 1913 and broke ground that September on what newspapers of the day called a cemetery for colored people. It is among the oldest African American burial grounds in Miami-Dade County and passed through an undertaker, his widow and a homebuilding company before winning historic designation in 1991. The Miami Times, the county's historically Black newspaper, later bought it out of foreclosure to keep it from being lost.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
