Dunkleosteus comes out of the Rocky River shale cliffs

The dark bands in the walls of the Rocky River valley are Cleveland Shale, sea floor mud from the late Devonian, and they are full of armoured fish. In 1928 a Cleveland Museum of Natural History crew cut the skull armour of a Dunkleosteus terrelli out of those cliffs in what is now the Metroparks Rocky River Reservation. It held up for decades as the largest and most complete single animal Dunkleosteus skull anywhere, and it started the museum's fossil fish collection. The river runs as much as 150 feet below street level here, which is the only reason the rock is reachable at all.
