Double Eagle II leaves Presque Isle
1978
Presque Isle, Maine
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Three Albuquerque businessmen lifted off from a Presque Isle potato field in August 1978 and landed in a French barley field 137 hours later, the first balloon crossing of the Atlantic after a century of fatal attempts. They navigated with charts on their knees and slept in shifts in an unpressurized gondola named Spirit of Albuquerque. A monument stands at the launch site. The French farmer never replanted the corner where they came down.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
