Limestone soil and a lake that holds off the spring frost made this one of the great tart cherry regions, at its peak over ten thousand acres, picked largely by migrant crews and by Milwaukee schoolchildren shipped up for the season. Mechanical shakers and Michigan competition cut it back sharply, but the orchards and the pie are still what people drive up for.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
