The city took the Bathgate family's land under the New Parks Act of 1888 and laid out lakes, meadows and ballfields across 127 acres. A play center and pool were added in 1936. In the 1970s the park became one of the places where Bronx DJs, Disco King Mario among them, set up sound systems for the outdoor jams that carried hip hop out of the rec rooms.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
