Club Zanzibar and the Jersey sound
1979
430 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey
The club opened on Broad Street in 1979 and became the room where Newark worked out its own version of house music, gospel voiced and soulful, driven by resident DJs including Tony Humphries from 1982 and later Kerri Chandler. It was a Black and Latino gay club first, and its records were carried to London while New York turned to rap. The building was demolished in 2007.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
