Citrus Tower
1956
Clermont, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A 226-foot observation tower built in 1956 so tourists could look out over seventeen million citrus trees. The freezes of the 1980s pushed the groves south and the view filled in with rooftops, which makes the tower an accidental monument to the Florida that was: you climb it now to see the subdivisions that replaced the oranges it was built to show.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
