Children's Fairyland, the park Walt Disney came to look at
1950
Lake Merritt, Oakland, California

A local service club built Fairyland on the shore of Lake Merritt in 1950 out of storybook sets rather than thrill rides, which made it one of the first themed parks in the country and the model for a wave of imitators. Its Open Storybook Puppet Theater has run without a break since, the longest running puppet theatre in the United States. Walt Disney spent 1950 touring amusement parks for ideas, and this was one of the stops.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
