A storm-battered village on a sandbar with no cars and no road became, by the 1930s, the oldest gay and lesbian community in the country, a place where people could live openly a generation before that was legal anywhere on the mainland. The Arts Project's drag theatre has run since 1948. What was built here in hiding is now a National Historic Landmark.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
