Charlotte becomes a banking capital

Charlotte, North Carolina
Hugh McColl ran a North Carolina bank through some 200 acquisitions and finally bought BankAmerica outright, keeping the name and moving the headquarters here. A state law that had allowed statewide branching early gave its banks a head start. Charlotte is now second only to New York in American banking assets.
