1861

Joseph Bruin ran a slave trading firm out of this compound and held the people he bought in the two-storey brick building that still stands. When the war began Bruin was arrested and jailed in Washington, and United States marshals seized his property. The building he had used as a jail then served as the Fairfax County courthouse until 1865. His house, kitchen and wash house have all been demolished.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
