Bohemian Hall, the Czech beer garden in Astoria
1892
Astoria, Queens
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Bohemian Citizens' Benevolent Society was founded in Astoria in 1892 to look after Czech and Slovak immigrants, and its clubhouse and beer garden is on the National Register of Historic Places. Takings fell so far in the early 1990s that closing was proposed, and a Save the Hall campaign drew in neighbours with no Czech connection at all and kept it open. Vaclav Havel planted a linden tree in the garden and stayed for hours on a visit in 2000. The hall still runs a Sokol club, a language school and the annual Czech and Slovak festival.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
