Plume hunters shooting snowy egrets off the nest for the hat trade had brought the bird close to gone from the Gulf. Edward McIlhenny caught eight young birds, raised them in a cage on the family island and let them migrate, and they came back with others. Within twenty years there were tens of thousands nesting here, and the colony was a founding argument for the bird protection laws that followed.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
