Custer split his command and attacked the largest gathering of Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho ever assembled on the plains. He and 268 men were killed within an hour. It was the Plains nations' largest victory over the U.S. Army, and it guaranteed their defeat, as the army response over the next year broke the nations for good.
