The only Virginian and one of the few Southerners published in the Harlem Renaissance anthologies wrote in a one-room cottage at the back of her Lynchburg garden, which her husband built her and she named Edankraal. Because no hotel would take them, Langston Hughes, W E B Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall and Martin Luther King all stayed in the house. Garden, cottage and papers survive together, which almost never happens.
