Albina, where Portland redlined its Black residents
1950
Portland, Oregon
Displaced Vanport residents were funnelled into Albina, effectively the only district where Black Portlanders could get a mortgage. A coliseum, a hospital expansion and Interstate 5 then took successive bites out of it. Oregon had written Black exclusion into its founding constitution and is still among the whitest large states.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
