John Pemberton took a sabre wound at the fighting outside Columbus in the last week of the war and came out of it, like a great many veterans, dependent on morphine. He spent the following years mixing coca and kola preparations meant to replace it. The one that worked was reformulated without the wine when his new city went dry, and became Coca-Cola.
