A mob burns the Ursuline convent on Mount Benedict
1834
Somerville, Massachusetts
On the nights of 11 and 12 August 1834 a Protestant mob burned down a convent school run by Ursuline nuns on Mount Benedict, then in Charlestown and now inside Somerville. Rumours that a nun was being held against her will lit the fuse. Anti Catholic feeling running through New England kept it going. Most of the pupils were the daughters of Protestant families. The men tried for it were acquitted, and the state never paid the compensation the church asked for.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
