Alpine's cowboy poetry tradition traces to 1987, when the original Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering began a 33 year run on the Sul Ross State University campus before its steering committee dissolved it in 2019. Volunteers relaunched it the following year as the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering, which still brings together dozens of poets, musicians, and storytellers each winter.
