On November 5, 2009, Major Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire inside Building 42003 of the Soldier Readiness Processing Center, where soldiers were queuing for vaccinations and deployment paperwork. He killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 before a post police officer shot him. A court-martial convicted him in 2013 and sentenced him to death. In October 2026 the Army set his execution by firing squad, at Fort Hood, for December 3, 2026. The building was demolished in 2014 and the site holds trees, a gazebo and a plaque. The public November 5 Memorial, with the building's bricks set into its walks, stands beside the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.
