Emma E. Booker Elementary School stands on Dr Martin Luther King Way on the north side of Sarasota. On the morning of 11 September 2001 President Bush was sitting in on a second grade reading lesson in a classroom here. The first plane had already gone into the north tower and had been passed to him as an accident. A few minutes after nine his chief of staff Andrew Card came in behind the chair, leaned down to his ear and told him a second plane had hit the second tower and that the country was under attack. The press pool camera was running and stayed on his face. He said nothing, sat with the class for several more minutes, and left the room afterwards. It is still a working elementary school.
