The sea lion that took the yellowtail
2026
Shelter Island Boat Launch, San Diego, California
The public boat launch at the end of Shelter Island, the ramp everybody in San Diego uses to put a boat into the bay. A spearfisher came in here in June 2026 with his first yellowtail and a California sea lion followed him all the way to the dock, hauled itself up out of the water on its front flippers and went for the fish while he held it over his head. Spearfishers call them the tax man, because the sea lions have worked out that a diver with a speared fish is the easiest meal in the ocean. They lie around this ramp and the bait docks because that is where the fish comes ashore.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
