The history within reach
- Winter Quarters30 mi
Some 2,500 Latter-day Saints wintered in dugouts and log huts on the Missouri after leaving Nauvoo, and around 400 died of scurvy, malaria and exposure.
Two and a half million people came to a lagoon lined with white plaster palaces meant to prove the plains were civilised.
Malcolm Little was born here to a Garveyite preacher and his wife.
- Malcolm X34 mi
Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, where the Klan rode past the house while his mother was pregnant and his father, a Garveyite preacher, was later killed.
Omaha took the tournament in its third year when nobody else wanted it, and has hosted it every year since, the longest such run of any championship at one city in American sport..
