The Upper Peninsula State Fair fills its Escanaba fairgrounds each August with 4-H livestock shows, a carnival midway, and grandstand entertainment. Authorized by the state legislature in 1927 and first held in 1928, it is the U.P.'s only state fair and its largest agricultural gathering.

Chester Thordarson, an Icelandic immigrant who left school at fourteen and patented the million-volt transformer, bought an island and built a great hall and boathouse of local limestone with furniture carved with figures from the Icelandic sagas.
An island-wide celebration of Washington Island's Icelandic and Scandinavian settler heritage, with folk music, artisan crafts, and traditional food at sites across the island.
Four young Icelanders came here in 1870 for the fishing and wrote home, and it became the oldest Icelandic settlement in the United States.
The Trenary Outhouse Classic sends homemade outhouses mounted on skis racing 500 feet down Main Street each winter, with two-person teams competing across six age divisions.
