The Illumination is a solemn annual commemoration held every November 30, the anniversary of the 1864 Battle of Franklin, organized by the Battle of Franklin Trust. Luminaries are placed across the grounds of the Carter House and Carnton at dusk while the names of casualties are read aloud, and both sites open afterward for free public walk throughs.
