The country's oldest continuously operating open-air market has anchored South Philadelphia's Italian and immigrant communities since 1915. Each May the market closes 9th Street to cars for a weekend street festival with live music, the traditional pole-greasing contest, and food from the market's butchers, cheesemongers and produce stands. Vendors span seven blocks of the market district.
