The history within reach
The tiny Pine Barrens village of Chatsworth, self-styled capital of the pygmy pines, fills its streets with a juried craft show, live music, and cranberry foods drawn from the bogs that ring the town.
A one-day heritage fair held every October among the preserved 19th-century buildings of Batsto Village, a former bog-iron and glassmaking town inside Wharton State Forest.
A summer-long celebration at the birthplace of the cultivated highbush blueberry, where Elizabeth White and USDA botanist Frederick Coville first domesticated the fruit in the early 1900s.
Hammonton calls itself the Blueberry Capital of the World for the acreage of blueberry farms surrounding it, and marks the harvest with a festival of blueberry food vendors, crafts, and a car show at the high school.
Bike MS: City to Shore sends thousands of cyclists from Cherry Hill to Ocean City over one or two days each September, raising money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
