Twelve trail rides on horseback and covered wagon converge on Memorial Park from towns across Texas each February, some covering more than two hundred miles, before riding into downtown Houston for the rodeo parade the next morning. The Salt Grass Trail Ride, the oldest and largest of the group, has made the trek since 1952. It predates the rodeo itself as a standalone tradition and remains one of Houston's most distinctive late winter sights.
