Thousands of people jump into frigid Lake Michigan at North Avenue Beach each spring to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois, in the Chicago area's best known Polar Plunge. The 2026 edition was its twenty sixth consecutive year and raised more than a million and a half dollars. It is presented by Special Children's Charities.
