Green River celebrates its century old reputation for growing sweet melons with a parade, carnival and free watermelon handed out by local farming families. The town's shift from peaches to cantaloupe and watermelon followed a 1919 freeze that killed off its peach orchards. It has been held the third weekend of September since 1906.
