Delaware Township's Recreation Commission has run the Great Crate Race every Fourth of July since the late 1980s, sending homemade wooden crate cars down a hill behind the township school on what locals call Delaware Downs. It is a small-town soap-box-derby tradition in this rural Hunterdon County township, with divisions for kids and adults. It always runs on July 4th.
