Franklin calls itself the Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World, and its September Gem and Mineral Show fills the borough firehouse grounds with dealers, cutters and cases of rocks that glow under ultraviolet light. The Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society has run the show since the closure of the local zinc mines that first made the area famous among collectors. It draws rockhounds from well outside New Jersey for a weekend of indoor and outdoor tables.
