Illinois' second state fair runs eleven days each late summer at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, built in 1923 on former strip-mine land and once home to harness racing's Hambletonian from 1957 to 1980. Now run by the state, it draws well over a quarter million visitors with a midway, livestock shows, and grandstand concerts.

Two men fishing from a small aluminium boat drifted toward the dam at Lake Murphysboro in 2015, and one of them worked out what was about to happen before the other did.
