Inverness turns the whole month of October into a community celebration named for the native cooter turtles found in its lakes. A Cooter King and Queen pageant at the Valerie Theatre kicks things off, followed by a costume carnival, a zombie run, and themed weekends staged by the city and local arts groups. The tradition grew out of the town's long-running Cooter Festival. (2026 dates approximate, based on last year's full-month run.)
