Each October, tarantulas emerge from their burrows in the Sierra foothills to mate, and Coarsegold Historic Village marks the occasion with a full day of tarantula races, a live tarantula derby, and contests for hairiest legs and fastest pizza eating. Now in its 23rd year, the festival draws travelers heading up Highway 41 toward Yosemite.
