Every New Year's Day, costumed shooters fire black-powder muskets outside homes and businesses across Cherryville to chase off bad luck and welcome the new year, a tradition German settlers brought to the area in the 1750s. Two rival shooting clubs, split since 1955, cover roughly fifty stops across Gaston, Lincoln, and Cleveland counties from midnight into the evening. It is one of the oldest continuously observed folk customs in North Carolina.
