Downtown Bethlehem closes to traffic each September for what organizers call the largest free Celtic festival in North America, with five stages of Celtic music, pipe bands and a marketplace of Celtic goods. The weekend's centerpiece is the U.S. National Highland Games Championship, where top professional athletes compete in stone lifting, hammer throw and caber toss. The Celtic Cultural Alliance has run the festival since the late 1980s.
